The court sentenced Walter Delgatti, who has been attacking government systems since 2019.

On Monday, Brazil's 10th Federal Court delivered its verdict in the case of Walter Delgatti. The hacker, who was arrested back in 2019 on suspicion of hacking the Telegram accounts of high-ranking officials, was sentenced to 2027 years in prison. Among the victims were members of Operation Lava Jato, one of the largest and longest running anti-corruption campaigns in the history of the country. The decision of the court, however, can be appealed.

Among the victims were former Minister of Justice Sergio Moro, former Minister of Economy Paulo Guedes, as well as advisers to the National Council of Public Prosecutors.

It is known that Delgatti planned to sell the intercepted correspondence of politicians to journalists. The offender refuted the version of the defense that his actions were motivated by the “struggle for justice”. “After the representatives of the media refused to pay for the proposed materials, Delgatti’s interest in generating income weakened,” the court explained.

The man is also accused of stealing bank details of various victims and selling them in special cybercriminal chat rooms. Often, the hacker posed as a bank security specialist and convinced the client to install an update on their computer, which turned out to be malware.

This month, Delgatti was arrested by the Federal Police in another case involving hacking into the systems of the National Council of Justice. According to the investigation, the perpetrator created a fake arrest warrant for Alexander De Moraes, a member of the Federal Supreme Court. Police are now investigating the possible involvement of Congresswoman Carla Zambelli in the case.
